What is battle for jalibah airfield?

The Battle for Jalibah Airfield took place during the Gulf War in 1991. The airfield was a strategic location for both American and Iraqi forces as it was located on the main highway connecting Kuwait and Iraq. The U.S. Army's 2nd Armored Cavalry Regiment (2nd ACR) was tasked with seizing the airfield on February 27, 1991.

The battle began with the 2nd ACR launching an attack with M1 Abrams tanks and M2 Bradley Infantry Fighting Vehicles. The Iraqi forces initially put up fierce resistance, firing rocket-propelled grenades and artillery at the advancing U.S. forces. However, the Americans were able to push through and capture the airfield by the end of the day.

The battle was significant because it gave the U.S. forces control of a vital piece of terrain and prevented the Iraqi Army from moving reinforcements and equipment through the area. The airfield was later used as a staging area for the coalition's ground offensive into Iraq.

The battle resulted in the loss of 18 U.S. soldiers and 3 wounded, while the Iraqi forces suffered more than 200 casualties.
